Following the creators’ concerns about AI Sora’s training model, YouTube took a big step in helping creators by introducing a new feature that gives them control over how their video is used to train AI models. Now, creators can choose to participate in third-party AI training, which is located in the YouTube Studio dashboard.
Opt-out by default, opt-in if desired
Content from creators is, by default, not used for AI training. However, the “third-party training” option is now available to anyone who wants to help develop AI. Through this feature, creators can authorize specific companies from a list of 18 firms, including tech giants like Apple, Meta and NVIDIA.
YouTube clarified that creators with administrative roles in the YouTube Studio Content Manager are eligible for this feature. They can adjust these settings anytime through their account dashboard.
Addressing longstanding complaints
Creators have criticized the rise of generative AI, claiming that companies are using their work without permission. YouTube’s new tools aim to address these concerns.
“We see this as an important first step in supporting creators and helping them realize new value for their YouTube content in the AI era,” stated a Google forum post announcing the feature.
While YouTube’s Terms of Service already prohibit unauthorized scraping of content, violations have occurred, leading to datasets, like “The Pile,” containing YouTube captions. Unfortunately, YouTube acknowledged that it is unable to impose retroactive penalties for previously unauthorized use.
This project is in line with YouTube’s bigger push to develop ethical artificial intelligence algorithms. In order to give creators the opportunity to profit from their work, the site is also looking into direct download options for approved companies.
Global rollout
Over the coming days, YouTube will notify creators globally about this update through banner notifications on desktop and mobile.
