AI and humans are going to share the spotlight as part of Meta’s ambitious goals for the future of content creation. The tech giant is pushing its AI tools to a new level, allowing users to create personalized bots that can post content, interact with others and even reflect their creator’s personality.

Meta’s growing AI ambitions

Connor Hayes, Meta’s Vice President of Product for Generative AI, shared with “Financial Times” that the company has already seen hundreds of thousands of these bots created.

“We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do,” Hayes said. He added that these bots would be able to produce and distribute AI-generated content in addition to having bios and profile pictures.

New era of content creation

Meta’s approach differs from other platforms like YouTube, which emphasize promoting human-made content. By putting AI bots on equal with human creators, Meta hopes to make its platforms “more entertaining and engaging.” This strategy has raised eyebrows among content creators, many of whom are skeptical about AI’s growing influence.

The company’s AI character creation tool, currently available only in the U.S., could eventually be rolled out globally. With more than 3 billion users, Meta envisions a future where Facebook, Instagram and other platforms are overrun by AI-generated content.

What does this mean for social media?

The rise of AI bots poses a number of concerns. Will advertisers handle content created by AI the same way they would with content created by humans? Will people think AI bots are interesting or think they’re just a gimmick? Platforms like TikTok have already accepted AI-driven content, demonstrating how simple it is to combine user-generated content with commerce, even while these issues persist.

For now, Meta seems determined to reshape the digital landscape, balancing innovation with the potential challenges of a bot-filled future. Whether this vision succeeds or creates a chaotic content storm remains to be seen.
