A South Korean YouTuber has been arrested after it was determined that a series of viral “police bodycam” videos posted online were completely fabricated using artificial intelligence. The incident is gaining attention as it’s a big example of AI-generated videos can cause confusion and real-world legal trouble when presented as real footage.

Realistic “bodycam” footage

The YouTuber, who posted content under the name “Patrol 24 Hours,” used AI tools such as ChatGPT in conjunction with video creation and editing software to create first-person police encounters. The videos were remarkably similar to real bodycam footage, depicting police responding to calls, confronting suspects, and escalating situations in a very realistic manner.

The videos were posted on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, where they gained millions of views. Many viewers believed the videos were actual police encounters, unaware that they were actually AI-generated content intended for entertainment purposes.

Viral spread triggers official complaints

As the videos were shared, some people started to file complaints with South Korea’s National Police Agency, thinking that the videos were real. This led to an investigation that ultimately found the videos were all AI-generated and had nothing to do with any police agency.

It was found that the creator of the videos had not clearly labeled them as fictional, leading to many people misunderstanding the videos.

The Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency arrested the YouTuber for several reasons, including a violation of communications and telecommunications laws. The police also believe that the creator of the videos operated a paid subscription service for AI-generated explicit content.

The need for more labeling of content

With the increasing power of AI, video producers have the responsibility of clearly labeling their AI-generated content. This is a time when there is a need for ethical guidelines for the production of AI-generated videos, which can easily lead to confusion between reality and fiction.
