Directorial debut “Iron Lung” from YouTube creator Mark Fischbach, known online as Markiplier, posted a notable performance at the global box office during its opening weekend.
Box office results
“Iron Lung” opened wide in North America and several international markets on January 30, 2026. Against a modest production budget of around $3 million, the self-financed science fiction horror film grossed approximately $17.8 million domestically in its first weekend and reached an estimated $21 million worldwide.
“It’s been a bit of an emotional day in the best way possible. So I’ll first say, Thank you guys so much,” Markiplier emotionally said in a livestream.
The strong showing came among a crowded release slate that included Sam Raimi’s “Send Help,” which claimed the top spot with about $20 million in U.S. ticket sales. Both films have landed well with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. “Iron Lung” holds an 89% Popcornmeter rating, while “Send Help” is close behind at 87%. Critical reception is more split: “Send Help” has a 93% critics score, while “Iron Lung” sits at 44%. Even with that gap, “Iron Lung’s” opening remains a notable debut for Markiplier, especially given it launched against a new release from one of horror’s most established directors.
The unusual marketing of the film
What sets “Iron Lung” apart is its path to theaters. Rather than relying on traditional studio distribution, Markiplier leveraged his large online audience and direct engagement with theaters and fans to secure screenings in thousands of locations. The film’s success shows that a creator with a dedicated fan base can compete at the box office without conventional marketing or distribution agreements.
“Iron Lung” is adapted from a 2022 video game and stars Markiplier alongside a cast including Caroline Rose Kaplan and Troy Baker. The plot follows a convict navigating a tethered submarine through a blood ocean on a desolate moon, a setting that leans into the atmospheric tension of science fiction horror.
