YouTube is testing a new channel layout for select creators, introducing a design that resembles streaming platforms like Netflix. The updated layout, which is part of YouTube’s experimental “Shows” feature, is intended to improve content organization and discovery.
The new design replaces the standard channel homepage with a layout that highlights episodic content. Viewers see larger video previews with details like view counts and video lengths, along with a “Start Watching” button. Below this, the upcoming content will be displayed in a schedule format. Additional sections will organize videos by series with descriptions and playlists.
Showing episodic content
The updated layout is aimed at creators who produce connected or serialized content. Channels like Law&Crime, a true crime network with over seven million subscribers, are among the first to use the new design. Their channel now includes features like scheduled programming and organized playlists, which make it easier for viewers to navigate their content.
YouTube describes the goal of the experiment as improving the user experience for channels with episodic content. The platform is also introducing tools like season organization, genre tags, and optimized artwork to support creators using the new layout.
Adapting to viewer habits
This change reflects YouTube’s efforts to align the audience’s viewing habits, as more users watch content on TVs. The new layout is designed to make channels with structured content more accessible and organized, which is similar to traditional TV networks or streaming services.
The experiment is currently being tested with 10% of YouTube users in select regions. If successful, the new layout could become a standard option for creators who focus on episodic or thematic content.
