YouTube is rolling out a new search filter that lets users exclude Shorts from their search results. The update gives viewers more control over the types of videos they see when they search on the platform, particularly if they prefer longer content formats over short-form clips.

Long-form content is prioritized

The new option appears as a filter within YouTube’s search tools, allowing users to remove Shorts from the list of results for a given query. When enabled, searches will prioritize longer videos, typically videos uploaded in standard formats and omit short-form vertical content. The change is intended to help users tailor their experience depending on what they are looking for, such as tutorials, reviews or long-form entertainmentwithout scrolling past Shorts in search listings.

Until now, YouTube’s search algorithm does not offer a built-in way to separate Shorts from other video formats. With Shorts increasingly featured in recommendations and search results, some users have asked for more precise filtering, especially when they’re seeking in-depth or longer content.

New YouTube’ search tools

Search filters on YouTube have long included options like upload date, video length and type (e.g., live or 4K). Adding a Shorts exclusion filter expands these tools and gives users another way to refine results. The filter does not prevent Shorts from being viewed on the platform, it simply removes them from specific searches when users choose this option.

For viewers who primarily use YouTube for news, education or longer videos, the update may make it easier to quickly find the content they want. Creators who focus on longer formats might also benefit if their videos become more visible in filtered search results.

The filter is expected to roll out gradually and may not be available to all users immediately. As it becomes more widely accessible, it could offer a simple way for people to filter search results by the types of videos they prefer.
