Vodafone has released a TikTok advertising campaign in Germany that features a presenter created with generative AI. The digital spokesperson promotes home internet services and cashback offers. The character quickly drew attention online after viewers noticed details that suggested it was not a real person.

Company confirms after viewers noticed

Users on TikTok pointed out inconsistencies such as irregular hair movement, a disappearing mole and facial expressions that seemed unusual. After speculation spread, Vodafone confirmed the presenter was AI-generated. In a translated response to comments, the company said, “AI is so much a part of everyday life these days that we also try it out in advertising.” The company framed the campaign as an experiment in using new technology for marketing.

This is not Vodafone’s first rodeo when it comes to AI-driven advertising. In 2024, the company ran a campaign in which every shot was generated by AI instead of filmed. These digital figures are less costly than human performers and avoid scheduling or contract issues. Moreover, brands can also tightly control their image.

The use of AI in marketing

AI-generated characters are increasingly visible across global marketing. Virtual influencers such as Lil Miquela have been featured in campaigns for major brands including Calvin Klein and BMW. Supporters say the approach can help brands scale content quickly, but critics argue that audiences may find synthetic spokespeople less authentic. In Vodafone’s case, early viewer comments show both curiosity and skepticism, with many noting the subtle artifacts that made the ad appear artificial.

Vodafone has not announced plans to expand the use of AI presenters to other regions or campaigns. Reactions to this campaign may guide whether AI characters remain a small-scale experiment or become a larger part of Vodafone’s marketing strategy.
