Instagram is testing a new standalone app that focuses on a more temporary and minimal way of sharing content. Rather than adding new features to its main platform, the company is experimenting with a separate experience built around disappearing posts.
Instagram has introduced a new app called “Instants,” which centers on photos and videos that disappear after a short period of time. The app allows users to share content that remains available for 24 hours, but can only be viewed once by each recipient.
Instants is currently available in select regions, including Spain and Italy, indicating that the feature is still in a testing phase rather than a full global rollout.
A simplified approach to sharing
The app is designed around a more limited set of tools compared to the main Instagram platform.
Users can only capture photos or short videos using the in-app camera, and content from a device’s camera roll cannot be uploaded. Editing options are also minimal, with only basic text overlays available.
Once shared, posts are temporary and cannot be replayed multiple times, which changes how content is consumed compared to standard posts or Stories.
Instants emphasizes spontaneous sharing rather than curated posts. The format is built around quick, in-the-moment updates, with fewer editing tools and no permanent feed. This structure is intended to encourage more casual interactions, particularly among close connections such as mutual followers or selected friend groups.
The overall experience is closer to ephemeral messaging and short-lived content, rather than traditional social media posting.
Instagram has previously tested similar features within its main app, but Instants separates that experience into its own product. This allows the company to experiment with different formats without changing the core platform.
Meta has indicated that multiple versions of the app may be tested over time, suggesting that features and functionality could continue to evolve based on user feedback.
