Discord has introduced a new feature called “Ignore,” allowing users to mute others discreetly without the directness of blocking. This feature is accessible through a user’s profile menu and mutes notifications and hides messages from the ignored individual, preventing them from knowing they’ve been ignored.
Unlike blocking, ignoring doesn’t prevent the ignored person from viewing your profile or messaging you, although you won’t see their interactions unless you choose to unhide them. This approach helps to avoid conflict and stress by maintaining discretion.
With the new Ignore feature, you can hide new messages, direct messages (DMs), server message notifications, profiles and activities from specific users. Ignore is different from Blocking and Muting, as it’s a happy medium between the two. For example, when a user is Ignored, their DMs appear darkened. Their messages will also be hidden in group chats and servers. However, you can still view those messages by pressing the Show button.
How to use the Ignore feature
Desktop:
-
- Right-click on the user’s profile.
- Select “Ignore” from the menu.
- Confirm the action.
Mobile:
-
- Tap on the user’s avatar.
- Select the ellipsis (…)
- Choose “Ignore.”
To unignore someone, follow the same steps and select “Unignore.”
A new way to ignore
This feature is part of Discord’s enhanced safety measures, especially aimed at younger users, seeking to provide more subtle ways to manage interactions. Additionally, Discord has joined the non-profit foundation ROOST, alongside companies like OpenAI and Google, to develop open-source technology that detects child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
The Ignore feature offers a balanced approach to managing interactions, providing control over whose messages you see without the potential fallout of a full block. It’s a thoughtful addition to Discord’s suite of tools aimed at fostering a safer and more comfortable environment for all users.
