YouTube is testing a new feature to help creators transform long-form content into Shorts more easily. This update is part of the platform’s ongoing effort to support multiformat content creation and boost engagement.

The tool, currently available to a small group of English-speaking creators, allows users to “Create a video highlight” through the video editor in YouTube Studio’s desktop version. YouTube claims that this feature allows content creators to make engaging 16:9 highlights from longer videos quickly.

Building on existing tools

Clipping highlights isn’t a new concept for YouTube. A clipping tool compatible with Shorts was introduced by the platform in 2022 to help creators adapt to the increasing demand for short-form content. By lowering the amount of manual effort needed to produce standout clips, this updated version seeks to streamline the process further.
