YouTube is currently testing a threaded comments feature, which takes a similar approach to comment organization used by platforms such as Reddit. This feature allows users to reply to individual comments in a nested fashion, creating multi-level conversation threads instead of single chains.

At this stage, the test is limited to YouTube Premium subscribers, who can use and evaluate the feature until August 14. YouTube will use the users’ feedback to determine if and how the feature will be rolled out more broadly.

How the new format works

The purpose of threaded comments is to provide a clearer structure for discussions that occur under videos. With the new format, replies to specific comments appear grouped together, making it easier for users to follow particular conversations. This system is already standard on several social platforms, including Reddit, Bluesky and Meta’s Threads.

Threaded comments are just one part of YouTube’s ongoing changes to support user interaction. Recent updates have included allowing creators to convert comments directly into Shorts and improving how comments are accessed by younger users, particularly through the YouTube Kids app. These changes reflect YouTube’s efforts to create a platform that fosters community interaction and direct engagement between creators and viewers.

The testing process

YouTube has stated that feedback from Premium users is an important part of this testing process. Participants in the trial can access the new feature by visiting youtube.com/new, where they can activate and use threaded comments. YouTube is interested in understanding whether this feature impacts the quality or experience of discussions under videos.

The company is also exploring how threaded comments could support other initiatives, such as AI-based systems that use conversation data to refine content recommendations and search results. The outcome of the test period and the feedback collected will inform any decisions on widespread adoption of threaded comments. At this time, YouTube has not announced a timeline for general release, and the full effects of the feature remain to be seen.
