YouTube’s Dream Screen feature has been improved to enable creators to create AI-powered video backgrounds, looking to improve the quality of its Shorts. This new tool, which was previously restricted to image backgrounds, creates 1080p video clips in cinematic styles using Google DeepMind’s Veo.

How it works

The feature is available to creators by opening the Shorts camera, interacting with the “green screen” button, and choosing “Dream Screen.” Users can choose an animation style and create a unique video background after entering a word prompt such as “candy landscape” or “magical forest with a stream.” Creators can select the ideal backdrop for their shorts from a variety of created options.

“Now you can create a video background instantly with just a few words,” YouTube shared in a post on X. There are countless creative options available with this feature, such as creating an animated opening for a short film or putting oneself in a scene from a beloved novel.

A competitive edge

While TikTok also offers AI-generated image backgrounds, it doesn’t yet support video backgrounds. YouTube has a clear edge in the competition for short-form videos thanks to its Dream Screen.

Currently, the feature is available in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with plans for broader access in the future. For more versatility, YouTube also announced that Dream Screen will soon enable creators to create six-second stand-alone video clips for Shorts.

Safeguards and accessibility

Google has put restrictions and limitations for using AI-generated backgrounds in place to stop misuse. English is currently the only supported language, and only a limited number of creators have access to the service.

YouTube continues to emphasize its dedication to assisting creators in producing captivating and innovative content as it keeps improving its tools.
