YouTube has released a new parental control feature that allows parents to keep a closer eye on their teens’ accounts and ensures safer online experiences for them.

A closer look at teen accounts

The new feature enables parents to link their YouTube accounts to their teen’s account. By doing this, parents can gain a better understanding of their teen’s online behavior without violating their privacy by seeing insights like the quantity of uploads, comments and subscriptions the teens have made.

“YouTube wants to empower teens to become responsible digital citizens,” said the company. By encouraging safe content-sharing methods, the goal is to guarantee that teenagers are using the platform to make educated decisions.

Easy set-up and monitoring

Parents can set up this new feature through YouTube’s Family Center. They can monitor their teen’s activities by simply scanning a QR code to link their accounts. Additionally, YouTube will notify the parent and the teen when new videos are posted or when livestreams start.

Although parents can keep an eye on their teen’s activities, they have will not have control over the content that is shown to them since YouTube’s algorithm is still tailored to the user’s preferences. They will, however, be informed of any changes to the video privacy settings as well as any private or unlisted films.

Global rollout and future enhancements

This feature is now available globally on both Android and iOS devices. According to YouTube, new measures to improve parental control might be implemented in the future.

In order to ensure that these tools fulfill the needs of both parents and kids, the company collaborated with Common Sense Networks and its Youth and Families Advisory Committee during the development process.

Other platforms, such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, have already rolled out similar parental controls.
