YouTube confirmed that its “likeness detection” tool is now being made available to Hollywood studios, talent agencies, and the artists they represent. The system is designed to identify AI-generated videos that replicate a person’s face or identity without permission.

The tool functions similarly to YouTube’s Content ID system, but instead of detecting copyrighted material, it scans uploaded content for AI-generated likenesses. If a match is found, participants can review the content and request removal if it violates platform policies.

Access does not require individuals to have a YouTube channel, as agencies and studios can enroll talent directly into the system.

How the system works

Participants are required to verify their identity before using the tool, typically through submitted images or ID checks. Once enrolled, their likeness is tracked across uploaded videos, allowing the system to flag potential deepfakes or altered media.

Importantly, flagged content is not automatically removed. Instead, it goes through YouTube’s existing review process, which considers context such as parody, satire, or public interest before taking action.

This means the tool operates primarily as a detection and reporting system rather than an automated enforcement mechanism.

A continuation of earlier rollout

The expansion follows earlier phases of the program, in which likeness detection was introduced to YouTube creators, then to journalists and political figures in a pilot group.

By extending access to Hollywood, YouTube is increasing the number of participants who can monitor and respond to unauthorized use of their image, particularly as generative AI tools become more widely available.

Deepfakes have become more difficult to detect as AI video tools improve, raising concerns around impersonation, misinformation, and unauthorized commercial use. Platforms have been under increasing pressure to provide tools that allow individuals to manage how their likeness is used online.

The tool does not prevent deepfakes from being created, however, it adds a structured way for individuals and their representatives to identify and respond to them as they appear.
