X (formerly Twitter) is expanding its creator monetization tools with a new feature that allows users to place paywalls inside their posts.
The platform recently introduced “Exclusive Threads,” a feature that lets creators lock parts of their thread-style posts behind a subscription. The update is part of the platform’s bigger set of monetization tools called Creator Subscriptions 2.0, which aims to give creators more ways to earn directly from their audiences.
What can creators do with “Exclusive Threads”
With Exclusive Threads, creators can post a thread in which some parts remain public, while later posts are restricted to paying subscribers. This allows them to tease the content in the opening post while keeping the rest behind a paywall.
The subscription button is also embedded directly within the conversation, making it easier for readers to subscribe if they want to see the full thread.
While the site once limited posts to short messages, many users now publish long, essay-style threads that span multiple posts. Exclusive Threads gives creators a way to monetize that format instead of offering it entirely for free.
More tools for creators to earn
The platform has also added new features designed to help creators promote and manage their subscription offerings. These updates include a refreshed subscription display that explains the benefits of subscribing, a shareable subscription card that creators can use to promote their paywalled content, and a new dashboard that shows earnings and subscriber insights in one place.
X has also simplified the subscription setup process so eligible creators can activate the feature faster. The new monetization tools may have the same appeal as other direct fan subscriptions like Patreon and Substack building businesses around paywalled content and community access, which have become a major revenue source for creators across the internet.
