Following a spike in online harassment caused by out-of-context videos shared on X (previously Twitter), YouTube streamer Valkyrae is looking for legal counsel. The clips, which frequently include misleading captions, have sparked hate and misrepresented her comments.
Misleading captions according to Valkyrae
Valkyrae expressed her frustration on X on November 29, describing how these posts misrepresented her words and transformed personal or harmless moments into subjects for criticism.
“Some of these clips are from when I shared a non-consensual sexual experience, and out of context, I’m perceived as a whore,” she tweeted. In another, commenters allegedly altered her story of an innocent trip to a Japanese hot spring with friends as a sexual encounter.
The involvement of Stake
The clips show the logo of the gambling website Stake.com. Community Notes on X have flagged the posts for spreading false information, but it is still unclear whether Stake is involved or whether its logo was used without permission. Since the harm has already been done in spite of the attempts at clarification, Valkyrae announced on November 30 that she had scheduled a consultation with a lawyer.
Taking a stand against online harassment
“The lies and hate I’ve received have been insane,” Valkyrae stated, highlighting how the platform’s environment has amplified the issue. She also asked those who have experienced similar defamation to provide her with additional proof.
Valkyrae’s supporters have come together and called on her to pursue aggressive legal action. “It’s disheartening to see creators being targeted like this,” one fan wrote.
While Valkyrae hasn’t revealed specific legal steps yet, her decision underscores the importance of addressing cyberbullying and holding accountable those who spread harmful misinformation. Others in similar situations might be motivated by this move and demand better security online.
