Twitch has introduced a feature that shows ads when a viewer pauses a stream. The change has drawn mixed reactions from users who noticed the ads appearing during both live broadcasts and recorded videos.
Ads showing when users pause a stream
In the past, the platform mainly showed ads before streams or during scheduled breaks. With this update, ads may display even while playback is paused. Some viewers say the placement feels unexpected since pausing was usually a moment without interruptions. Others view it as a routine product test that may change over time.
Twitch addressed the changes on X: “As a part of our ongoing work to make ads less intrusive while offering creators additional revenue sources, these ads will appear when a viewer pauses a stream. The skippable ads experiment is still ongoing at the same time.”
The company has not confirmed whether pause screen ads are part of a limited experiment or a permanent rollout. Twitch has adjusted its ad formats several times in recent years as it looks for ways to grow revenue and streamer payouts. This addition appears to be another variation under evaluation.
Criticism of the ads
The community did not take this new update very well. Some users shared screenshots and said the ads affected their viewing experience. Others noted that advertising formats across streaming platforms often evolve as companies test new approaches. Even creators like DansGaming said the ads “won’t accomplish much as the viewer will be 30s-6 minutes behind the live [stream] on unpause.”
The feature does not appear to be active for all users yet. That suggests Twitch may still be gathering data before deciding whether to expand or revise it. Small interface changes like this can influence viewing habits, so the feature’s long-term impact will likely depend on user response and platform metrics.
