TikTok is introducing a new way for users to control what appears in their For You Page. The platform has introduced a global feature that allows people to select specific topics they’re interested in, such as fashion, fitness, gaming and music, to guide content recommendations. The goal is to improve relevance and reduce randomness in the feed.

How it works

The new feature is located under Settings > Content preferences > Update interests. From there, users can choose from a list of general topics. TikTok will use these selections to influence what content appears in their For You Page. This is not a full algorithm reset. However, it does provide a clear signal to the system about what users want to see more of.

TikTok says this update will complement existing signals, such as watch time and engagement. It also provides users with a way to shift their content experience without needing to start a new account.

Benefits to creators

If more viewers opt into specific topics, TikTok’s system may be better equipped to match creators with interested audiences. It gives creators a stronger chance of being seen by users who are already leaning into their content category.

It also reinforces the importance of consistency. If your content regularly falls into a specific category, such as parenting or tech reviews, you’re more likely to be favored by topic-based recommendations. Creators who jump across unrelated topics may see less benefit.

The feature is rolling out globally, but not everyone will have access immediately. Once available, it’s worth reviewing the listed content categories and aligning your strategy if necessary.

Key to growth and visibility

TikTok’s algorithm changes can significantly impact growth. Small tweaks like this one can shift who sees your content and how often. For creators, staying on top of these updates is not optional, as it is essential for maintaining steady visibility and engagement.
