Reddit found a pricing error, and thousands of shoppers showed up.
Late on Friday, Aug. 21, a post in Reddit’s r/perth pointed out that a 24-pack of Jack Daniel’s & Cola, sold through Coles by its Liquorland subsidiary, had dropped from A$130 to A$27. “Found this. I’m assuming it’s a mistake?!” the poster wrote. It wasn’t the only one. Shoppers turned up other 24-packs at the same kind of discount, and by Saturday the Coles website and app were down for hours. Coles later blamed a technical error on selected 24-packs.
However, this is not a story about discounts, shopping or how easily an e-commerce site goes down. It’s a story about how fast information travels now.
Reddit is an early warning system
Communities like Reddit find stories before those stories reach a mainstream audience. That’s the value. There’s also a problem.
Reddit posts carry misinformation. They lack context, and sometimes the person posting simply has the wrong information.
That doesn’t make these communities useless. Quite the opposite. They give you an early look at a story while it’s still moving, which is a signal that something is worth investigating.
People want information fast. They don’t need the complete story right away. Sometimes the gaps are the reason they keep reading.
What creators do with the signal
Think of Reddit as a radar. Interesting posts are the signals, and you’re the signal booster. You don’t have to be the person who finds something first. When a story gains traction inside a niche community, you can be the person who verifies it, adds context and turns it into something a larger audience understands.
That’s where creators add real value. The speed of information has changed, but credibility still takes work. Finding something first is useful. Checking whether it’s true matters more.
So pick the two or three subreddits that cover your beat and read them daily. When a post starts climbing, go to the source before you publish: the company, a receipt, a screenshot with a timestamp. The signal is free. The verification is the job.
