Instagram has rolled out a new feature allowing users to watch Reels at twice the normal speed. By pressing and holding on the right side of the screen while viewing a Reel, the video will play at 2x speed.
A TikTok-like feature
This addition mirrors similar functionalities on platforms like TikTok, where users have long had the ability to adjust playback speeds. The move underscores Instagram’s commitment to enhancing user experience by incorporating features that offer greater control over content consumption.
TikTok’s success worldwide has prompted other social media platforms to integrate similar features to retain and grow their user bases.
Instagram, for instance, introduced Reels in August 2020, allowing users to create and share 15-second videos set to music or other audio. This feature mirrors TikTok’s core functionality and aims to keep users engaged within the Instagram ecosystem. Similarly, YouTube launched “Shorts” in September 2020, offering a platform for brief, catchy videos akin to TikTok’s format.
Snapchat followed suit with “Spotlight” in November 2020, showcasing user-generated short videos to compete in the evolving social media landscape. Recently, these apps have also been incorporating TikTok-life features.
What this means for users and creators
Instagram’s playback feature allows viewers to engage with more content in less time, potentially increasing overall reach. As of now, the 2x playback feature is available to all Instagram users. To utilize it, simply press and hold on the right side of the screen during a Reel to activate the faster playback.
