Discord is rolling out an age verification system that users will need to complete in order to access certain features on the platform. The new requirement is set to begin next month and is designed to help Discord align with safety expectations and regulations around age-appropriate content and interactions.

What users can access

Under the upcoming update, users will be asked to confirm their age via an age-verification process before accessing certain parts of Discord. While basic features will remain available without verification, some servers, channels and services with age-restricted content may require verified age status. Discord is implementing this change to provide clearer boundaries on who can view or interact with certain types of content, especially where legal or safety guidelines apply.

The age verification system is being introduced alongside broader safety efforts, including community moderation tools, reporting systems and content controls. Discord says the intent is to reduce underage exposure to content that is age-sensitive and to help server owners manage access more effectively.

Why Age Verification Is Being Introduced

Discord’s user base spans a wide range of ages, and the platform has long offered features that are particularly appealing to teens and young adults. Twitch and YouTube already use age-verification measures in limited cases, typically requiring users to confirm their age or sign in to view mature or restricted content, especially when videos or streams are flagged as age-sensitive.

Once age verification begins rolling out, users who have not completed the process may find certain content and servers inaccessible until they verify. Discord has said that basic messaging and interaction features should remain available, however participation in communities tagged for mature or restricted content will require completion of the age check.

Discord plans to introduce the age verification requirement next month, with a phased rollout that may vary by region. As age verification becomes part of Discord’s access model, the platform could see adjustments in how communities are structured and who can participate in specific conversations.
