In a recent experiment, YouTube has started rolling out a feature called “Top Fans,” which lets creators restrict certain videos to only their most active viewers. According to reports, the setting limits access to roughly the top 1% of a channel’s audience based on engagement and viewing activity.
Videos published using the option are not publicly accessible to the rest of a creator’s audience, even if users receive a direct link to the content.
The feature appears to still be in limited testing, with only some creators reporting access so far.
A different form of gated content
Unlike YouTube memberships or third-party platforms such as Patreon, the Top Fans system does not require viewers to pay for access.
Instead, eligibility is determined by how actively users interact with a creator’s content. While YouTube has not publicly outlined the exact criteria, engagement metrics such as watch time, repeat viewing, comments and other interactions are expected to influence who qualifies.
The feature gives creators another option to share exclusive material with highly engaged audiences without placing the content behind a paywall.
Possible uses for creators
Creators who have discussed the feature online suggested that it could be used for experimental uploads, early previews, bonus content or videos intended for a smaller and more dedicated audience.
Because access is tied to audience engagement rather than payment, the system may encourage viewers to spend more time interacting with channels in order to qualify for future exclusive uploads.
YouTube previously referenced similar fan-focused tools during its Made On presentation, particularly regarding music creators and artist communities.
Over the past year, the platform has expanded its tools for fan interaction, AI-generated recommendations, creator subscriptions and audience targeting systems as competition among creator platforms continues to grow.
Instead of relying solely on paid memberships or public uploads, the feature introduces a middle ground in which highly engaged viewers gain access to exclusive content based on participation and viewing behavior within a channel’s community.
