A viral TikTok account that appeared to document real residents of a retirement home has been confirmed to be entirely AI-generated.
The account, @basincreekretirement, featured realistic videos of elderly characters in lighthearted scenarios and gained millions of views before the creators disclosed that no real people were involved.
“A fictional world made with AI & a lot of heart,” their bio says.
“This project exists purely for entertainment and creative expression — a small reminder that there’s still plenty left in the world to laugh about. Even if Basin Creek isn’t real, the laughter (and the merch) absolutely are.”
The account’s videos showed convincingly animated older characters engaging in humorous, slice-of-life moments such as dressing up for Halloween or joking with one another in everyday settings. The creators later clarified that the content was produced using AI-generation tools, combining text-to-speech dialogue and synthetic visuals.
Following the announcement, viewers expressed mixed reactions. Some praised the creative use of technology and storytelling, while others expressed surprise that what appeared to be genuine footage had been artificially created.
AI in content creation
Such a revelation adds depth to the conversation about how artificial intelligence is shaping modern content creation. As generative tools improve, distinguishing between human-made and AI-generated media has become more complex across social platforms.
In response, TikTok and other video platforms have introduced disclosure policies that require creators to label realistic AI-generated visuals and voices. The Basin Creek Retirement account used realistic AI for creative storytelling, which increases the need for transparency within the creator space.
As of now, the account’s creators have not indicated whether the series will continue or if future videos will include explicit AI-disclosure tags.
