The new Panasonic LUMIX GH5M2 has an extensive list of video features, but one that really stands out is its ability to livestream. In this article, we will be covering the new livestreaming capabilities of the Panasonic LUMIX GH5M2.
Live streaming capabilities
To start livestreaming, all you need is the GH5M2 and a smartphone. Users can livestream directly from the camera by utilizing the connectivity of their smartphone, but it doesn’t stop there. Here are all the ways the LUMIX GH5M2 can go live.
Wireless
The GH5M2 can livestream using the LUMIX Sync application for smartphones. This allows for wireless streaming in full HD 60p at 16Mbps / 8Mbps (H.264). This is all done by using the wireless connectivity directly from the phone to the camera. Wired Tethering to a mobile device will come with a future firmware update scheduled for 2021.
Via a 4G/5G connection
As we return to live, in-person events, many people are remaining cautious about what they attend. This is a perfect opportunity to mix in-person and online broadcasting to meet an audience where they are most comfortable.
By using the livestreaming function found in the GH5M2, users will be able to broadcast high-quality video from a secondary (or primary) camera while simultaneously recording a local, uncompressed copy to an external recorder. Since the GH5M2’s wireless livestreaming functionality is not dependent on the LUMIX Sync App to operate, this allows users to connect the camera directly to either mobile hotspots or to a built-in wireless infrastructure.
Recently on a LUMIX Live broadcast, the GH5M2 was taken out of the home studio and into a downtown park in Austin, TX. The entire event was livestreamed over a cellular network, allowing the host to monitor community questions with the same level of interaction typical of a traditional studio broadcast.
Wired IP streaming with the RTP/RTSP protocols
By connecting the GH5M2 to a router and streaming directly from the camera, creators gain the ability to place remote cameras (out of reach of a traditional camera operator) that can add an extra level of production quality. When the GH5M2 receives an IP streaming functionality firmware update with a planned 2021 release, users will be able to link their GH5M2 into a wired network to function as an IP camera. Through the addition of off-the-shelf pan tilt controllers, the GH5M2 can be transformed into an affordable remote camera allowing for central control.
Streaming and recording in places of worship has grown at an exponential rate over the last year. At the same time, while traditional PTZ cameras have been deployed, many organizations lack funding to invest in the required equipment. The GH5M2 will provide users a sub-$2,000 solution for high-quality, high-resolution streaming into their software of choice via the standardized RTP/RTSP signal.
LUMIX webcam app
It’s also possible to just use the USB port on the camera and connect it directly to a computer. You can use the LUMIX webcam app that turns the GH5M2 into a webcam. This offers a great solution for online gatherings with family and friends, and allows more people to experience life events, games and so many other activities. Until now, we often had to rely on below-average webcams for their interactions. With the GH5M2, users can drastically improve the image quality of their video connections to get closer to that in-person experience.
Take a Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) campaign, for example. While D&D plays heavily on imagination and storytelling, many have been expanding their campaign complexities as more and more find enjoyment in the game. By using the GH5M2 and LUMIX Webcam Software, users can provide next-level visuals to aid in their storytelling. From players who love to dress the part of their characters, to dungeon masters who create elaborate miniatures of their encounters, the GH5M2 allows players to express and share their visions in clear high definition, free of typical webcam conferencing IQ shortfalls.
Reimagining high-quality livestreaming
Using the LUMIX GH5M2 to livestream is a simple, streamlined process. And, with its ability to connect in many different ways, it’s a logical solution for many. These different methods – including using 4G or 5G, using the LUMIX webcam app or by utilizing the upcoming firmware update using Wired IP – will allow for a high quality image at a sub $2,000 price point.
