A new type of virtual creator could be emerging as agencies experiment with blending real-world and digital personas.

Tokyo-based VTuber agency Pandora has announced plans to trademark the term “XTuber,” short for “cross-tuber,” referring to creators who combine both virtual avatars and real-life appearances in their content.

A hybrid approach to VTubing

Traditionally, VTubers rely entirely on animated avatars to represent themselves on screen. The proposed XTuber model, however, introduces a hybrid format where creators can switch between or merge virtual and real-world identities.

According to the announcement, XTubers may use a mix of motion-captured avatars, real-life footage and AI-assisted visuals to create content that blends both formats.

This will allow creators to maintain the anonymity and creative flexibility of VTubing while still building a more personal connection with audiences.

Pandora pushes a new category

Pandora is trying to formalize and potentially lead this new category within the VTuber space. The agency has also launched an audition program to recruit talent for this hybrid format, actively developing XTuber creators rather than just introducing the concept.

Blending real and virtual personas could offer more flexibility, allowing creators to reveal parts of themselves when they choose, while still maintaining a digital identity. It may also create new opportunities for branding, sponsorships and audience engagement.

At the same time, questions remain around ownership and control, especially as agencies begin trademarking emerging formats.

If the concept gains traction, XTubers could represent the next evolution of VTubing, one where creators are no longer fully virtual or fully visible, but something in between.
